Strange Ways Of Making Money #1: Let Someone Rename You !

by golbguru on October 9, 2006

Here is an excerpt from an article on CBS under the title “Marine Takes Bids on New Name“:

“Hoping to raise money for his family and an orphanage, a 29-year-old Marine is running an online auction in which the winning bidder will get to give him a new name _ and he promises to make it legally binding.”

Doesn’t look like a good idea for $5:
“The bidding at Baker’s Web site, http://www.choosemyname.com, began July 20, with a $5 offer to name him Mr. Clean.”

But wait, look at this:
“Later bids supporting such names as George Bailey of Bedford Falls and Mr. Right gave way to a $26,333.31 offer from an online coffee vendor that wants the name tape on Baker’s uniform to display its slogan, “Finest Freshest Fastest.”"

I wonder if I can put in a bid with a clever name to boost my ailing blogging career. :)
Better still, I wonder if I can come up with some crazy idea like this and get myself on CBS.

26 grands is a lot of money ! BUT I won’t trade “Golbguru” even for 50 grands (so what if it is not even a real name!). However, if you insist on convincing me otherwise, you need to show me the money first and then we will discuss business. :)

Would you change your name for $26,000?

TIME Article on “Snooping Bosses”

by golbguru on September 6, 2006

An interesting article in TIME magazine about workplace spying. Read it here.

An interesting excerpt from the article reads like this, “A study by the American Management Association and the ePolicy Institute found 76% of employers watch you surf the Web and 36% track content, keystrokes and time spent at the keyboard. If that isn’t creepy enough, 38% hire staff to sift through your e-mail”

If you get your hands on the print version of this issue, there are some tips for bloggers on avoiding trouble. For some of you regular players it might be trivial knowledge, but for new bloggers it will sound more like a note of caution.
