Most Personal Finance Bloggers Are Rich, Self-Righteous, And Inflexible?

by golbguru on October 3, 2007

Recently, a reader added some extra dimensions to the topic which amounted to saying that most personal finance bloggers are rich and self-righteous. [Editor's note: I had the comment quoted here, but the author wanted it removed, so it's gone now]

Any thoughts?

Hosting Troubles: Internal Server Errors

by golbguru on March 19, 2007

I am sorry if some of you are having trouble accessing this blog today. I was trying to access it over a couple of hours around noon and kept getting “Internal Server Error” messages.

DreamHost is really testing my patience. In the last 4 months, similar things have happened for about 6 or 7 times. I will probably look for a different (more reliable and more expensive) hosting option very soon.

Some Popular Posts From The Recent Past

by golbguru on February 7, 2007

Earlier, I have listed some posts from my previous domain at Blogger. Here, I am highlighting some of the popular posts since I started writing on this new domain in mid-November. Listed below are 8 posts on a variety of topics; hopefully you will enjoy them. I would encourage readers to read through the comments. At times, comments really bring out the essence of the points under discussion.

Btw, sometimes I become sullen and don’t really live up to my tag line “personal finance doesn’t need to be boring!”, but I try :)

More Spam Than Comments

by golbguru on February 1, 2007

What is it with spam and Wordpress? It just keeps coming and coming….why so much spam-love for Wordpress? This certainly didn’t happen when I was with Blogger till a few months ago.

Yesterday, the number of spam comments on this blog passed the number of genuine comments and trackbacks, and this is how it looked:

spam blogging

Not good. :(

Full Feeds Are Disabled For The Time Being

by golbguru on January 25, 2007

Some of my fellow bloggers have noticed an errant website posting full content feeds of certain blogs. In the past couple of hours more than a dozen posts from this blog have been posted.

In order to discourage this, and while other resources are mobilized, I will disable full feed content for the time being. Instead, a 75 word “summary feed” will be published. I opologize for the inconvenience that this may cause to my regular readers.

If any of you, who are reading this, have faced a similar situation before…I would be interested in knowing what countermeasures you took.

I So Hate HTML And CSS And Internet Explorer

by golbguru on January 24, 2007

Finally, things are taking shape with this new theme. Thanks to Dimes, Sun, HC, Kirby, Maria, and Ispf for giving some timely input.

Now time for some wrath.

Why the heck can’t IE do what other browsers do? It did crap to my blogger template, then to my Giraffe theme and now if Ispf hadn’t mentioned some weird stuff (misplaced right side bar and missing “submit” button for the comments”) with IE6 there would have been some more crap with this theme. Browsers should have some kind of a common code….it sucks to keep modifying your template to optimize for every other browser.

I may have never mentioned this, but I don’t like HTML/CSS…sometimes, it causes a lot of pain and suffering to ignorant idiots like me.

In other news, till now, there are about 34 entries for the next edition of the Festival of Under 30 Finances to be hosted on this on blog the 26th January (Friday). Looks like some busy time ahead reading and sorting stuff. If you are interested in participating, submit your articles asap.

Need Recommendations: Is This Look Better Than The Previous Look?

by golbguru on January 24, 2007

I tried to change a few things in my previous Urban Giraffe theme and it just wouldn’t come out right. Finally I gave up and decided to switch to a different template. After a few hours of searching and reading reviews, I have (for now) chosen the TripleK2 theme by John TP. Let me know if you like this one better than the old Giraffe. I will be glad if you guys could voice your concern over anything in particular that you don’t like about this new theme.
The immediate reason for the shift was that the Giraffe template was messing up a few things in Internet Explorer (expecially the post titles); and here is a distribution of readers on my blog showing a large number of IE users:

distribution

So got to do it for the IE users :).

The most obvious drawback is that this theme is not “fluid”, so if you are using 800 x 600 screen resolution, you will have to scroll to get all of it. But, according to sitemeter statistics, less than 2% of my visitors are using that screen resolution…hopefully they won’t mind the change so much.

Step Into My Time Machine And Read Some Tales Of Yore

by golbguru on January 19, 2007

time machineIt has been almost 6 months since I started blogging actively….of which the first four months were spent on Blogger and next two on this new domain. Just thought of highlighting some old stuff from my Blogger times which my new readers may or may not have glossed over. Here are some posts that struck the right (sometimes the wrong) chord with many people. Generally arranged in the order of oldest to newest.
