Lost in thought and lost in time
While the seeds of life and the seeds of change were planted
Outside the rain fell dark and slow
While I pondered on this dangerous but irresistible pastime
I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the moment had arrived
For killing the past and coming back to life
I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the waiting had begun
And headed straight..into the shining sun
- Coming Back to Life - Pink Floyd (The Division Bell) (video)
I don’t know why, but I feel sort of connected with that song about now.
After 6.5 years of considerable efforts (not always successful) and some really bold and unconventional steps (and super-anxious waits) in the last few months, I finally have a job/career I have been dreaming about for a long time. I feel rejuvenated. Alive. Back to life.
However, this dream comes at the cost of another dream: my PhD degree. It was extremely painful to let go of several hundred hours of research and painstaking work, but ultimately, I had to be more practical than theoretical.
I don’t know how long this goodness is going to last, but I am going to enjoy it as long as it does.
With major distractions out of the way now, the inspiration to blog is slowly coming back to life too.

I never imagined something good would accompany Pink Floyd lyrics ;-).
Welcome back, it’s good to have you around again.
Best of luck with the new career!
Congratulations! Getting the dream job is always a morale booster. I’ve recently found more of a spark to blog myself. And you don’t necessarily have to give up the PhD forever. A job that you want and love is something a great many people don’t have
several years ago (dot com bubble), I was preparing myself to grad school. My boss at the time asked me to stay that we would be “rich”.
8 years later, and we’re still working on that
Sorry… My point with the comment above was:
You’re the only one to judge what’s right for you and your life. Just make sure that you won’t regret whatever path you take.
Best of luck!
One of the very few perks to a phd is that you get to call yourself Dr. on your credit cards. Other than that, I’m not sure there’s such a big difference unless you really really want to pursue the miserable job prospects of academia
Congrats on the new gig. Best of luck and continued success. Enjoy your blog.
Golbguru,
I’ve been checking my reader and visiting your blog daily to catch a whiff of you or anything new. I’m glad you’re back. You’ve got an audience that misses you!
Congratulations! Must have been a hard decision - I admire you courage! Good luck for what the future holds - with such an upbeat start, it is bound to be great!
Congrats!
It’s a shame you won’t be in the building next door any longer though.
David Gilmour’s newest album tops The Division Bell, by the way. Good luck with these life changes!
I really admire your courage to give up your PhD in the short term for your job. Great to have you back!
I thought I recognized the song. Money, but I also thought I’d try to comment and see if this function works now.
Had a similar situation, gave up my PhD after 2 and a half years. I knew I was capable but felt I’m more of an postivist than a theorist. I hope that whatever decision you make goes in your favour.
Thanks for sharing.
Its definitely a good song, especially because Pink Floyd is an awesome Band. “I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the waiting had begun And headed straight..into the shining sun” definitely an awesome line. I can see how you can relate to the song it makes sense.
Till then,
Jean
