Bought A Brand New Honda Civic

by golbguru on December 23, 2007

There are so many things happening in our lives right now that I don’t really have the time (or the patience) to elaborate on all of them.  However, I just wanted to post a few words to say that I am still alive!

Here is the latest development. After a few days of research into various compact cars, we finally went ahead and bought a 2008 Honda Civic for ourselves.

2008 honda civic

Long-time readers of this blog will remember that we purchased a 2005 Toyota Corolla less than 6 months ago.

Obviously, a lot has happened since then to warrant the purchase of the new Honda.

Astute readers will quickly draw conclusions based on this, this, and this. :)

I drew conclusions, hopefully astutely. Congrats!

2 Flexo 12.23.07 at 6:00 pm

Guess I’m not astute… you got a new job? What was wrong with the Corolla you bought recently? It sounded like it was what you wanted.

Anyway, I bought my Honda Civic new a few years ago, and I think it’s a great choice. The price for a new Civic isn’t much higher than the price for a used one, and the cars will last a long time, and hold their value in the mean time. Great choice on the Civic.

3 Patrick 12.23.07 at 7:38 pm

Congrats on the new job! (OK… I’m drawing a conclusion here…)

I think it is time for me to start looking, but I hope I don’t have a 13 hour interview!

4 Mrs. Micah 12.23.07 at 8:02 pm

New job? Yay! Civics are good cars–used or new. Well, they’re certainly good cars at the price, anyway. :) I’m partial to them because lots of my college friends had them and I’m used to borrowing them.

5 kitty 12.23.07 at 9:08 pm

Congratulations on a new job! I assume that now you need two cars to get to work.

My Civic is over a year old by now and I still love it. I think Civics are great.

6 Ed 12.23.07 at 9:56 pm

I was just looking at a new Civic. They are selling Natural Gas Civics in my area and would like to get one.
I am not sure if I can fit by big ars frame in there

7 golbguru 12.23.07 at 10:31 pm

Flexo, Patrick, Mrs. Micah, Kitty: Yes! it’s new job in a new town. Had to look for a second car.

Looked over used ones and new, and settled for the Honda Civic. Good crash test ratings, good fuel economy, and low depreciation were the main factors in the decision.

I was looking for a used Civic to save on the initial depreciation, but like Flexo mentions above, there isn’t much difference in price between a 2006 Honda Civic and a new one. Might as well pay an extra couple of thousand dollars for the peace of mind.

Ed: It’s rather big from the inside. I am sure you will be able to fit a lot of big things in there. I guess Civic is outgrowing it’s “compact car” label - in terms of size and also the price. It’s almost as large as some older mid-size sedans. NG Civics must be awesome if you can find enough NG fueling stations nearby. :)

So you’re quitting school, have a job, and… pregnant? Even if there’s not a new baby, a new job justifies a car purchase.

9 Ryan S. 12.23.07 at 11:44 pm

While I’m quite partial to Toyota, there’s nothing wrong with a Honda. It’s a great car; I hope it does well for you. Congratulations!

In this country buying a new car is nuts but maybe not in the US…

11 kitty 12.24.07 at 8:04 am

Moom, I don’t know where you are, but I believe in Europe new cars are about twice as expensive as in the US because of VAT.

12 golbguru 12.24.07 at 11:28 am

Ryan: Toyotas are great - and Corollas are cheaper than Civics - but they lack a lot of “standard” features - especially the latest models - side curtain airbags are still optional and so is ABS.

Kitty: Moom represents the land of the kangaroos for now, isn’t that right Moom?

I had a 1988 Honda Civic that went over 280,000 miles in 16 years. It was a very economic and VERY reliable car, and it handled better than cars that were much more expensive.

I hope you will be as fortunate with your Civic!

14 Super Saver 12.25.07 at 2:01 am

Golbguru,

Welcome back. Congratulations on the new job and new car.

15 Al 12.28.07 at 8:51 am

My brother also bought a new Honda, the CRV..total price was around $30,000..he financed it for 6 yrs(rolls eyes).

You can’t go wrong with a Honda,especially a Civic.

Congratulations on the new job and the new car!

17 Llama Money 12.31.07 at 9:35 am

I bought a new Civic Hybrid a few months back and couldn’t be happier. The Civic is a fantastic car, and while expensive for a compact, it’s worth every penny. It feels even more expensive than it is, and is a blast to drive, looks great, and gets crazy high gas mileage, even in regular form.

Hello:

This is my first time on your blog, and I found you accidently by looking up comments on a book review by an old boss, David Bach.

This has nothing to do with Civics or Hondas, but I do agree with your assessment on his writings as published in an earlier blog.

By the way, did you offer a book review on Allen Greenspan’s recently published book? I’d like to hear what you thought.

Regards

19 Ames Tiedeman 01.01.08 at 10:39 am

Hello,

Did you look at the Chevrolet Malibu or the host of new Saturns?

20 Mike 01.01.08 at 5:02 pm

couldn’t agree more re the Civic Hybrid. Where I live it is giving the Prius a run for its money.

If tax info is any good to you re hybrids have a look here:

Disappointing to see that you only buy Japanese cars.

:(

22 paidtwice 01.01.08 at 9:57 pm

Congrats on the new job and new car!

I was hoping for an impending arrival too… I will hold out hope for a little golbguru :)

23 thewild1 01.02.08 at 9:27 am

congrats on the new car

24 Kitty 01.02.08 at 10:47 am

“Disappointing to see that you only buy Japanese cars.”
In today’s global economy, most American cars are made in China, and many Japanese cars are made in America.

Additionally, the real question shall be - why can’t Americans produce the cars which have the same reliability as Toyotas and Hondas?

25 golbguru 01.02.08 at 11:58 am

Jack, Ames: I have a mental block against American cars. Plus the depreciation factor doesn’t improve the situation.

Kitty: “why can’t Americans produce the cars which have the same reliability as Toyotas and Hondas?” - I am not sure why this is the case, but I am sure that the reliability gap is closing in as we proceed in time.

26 MoneyNing 01.02.08 at 5:48 pm

golbguru: I probably have the same mental block :) But then when I actually do a comparison, the Japanese cars are better built. It’s not just the out the door price per horse power sometimes.

27 Money Blue Book 01.03.08 at 8:35 am

I debated between the Civic and Accord a while back when I was buying an economy car. I felt the Civic as well as the Toyota Corolla were both too underpowered…so I ended up getting the Accord. Quite Happy with my selection!

Congrats - My wife and I have a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid - you are right, it is pretty roomy inside for a smaller car. We get 52 MPG in the summer, around 45ish in the winter…love those $25 gas fillups. Enjoy!

29 Fiscal Musings 01.03.08 at 7:39 pm

Congrats on the new job and the Honda. I picked up a used Accord about a year and a half ago and it’s been great.

30 MoneyNing 01.04.08 at 8:17 pm

Come back Golbguru… we miss you :)

31 Golbguru 01.05.08 at 9:29 am

MoneyNing: Appreciate the call. I will be back … definitely.

It’s just that the new job and relocation stuff has sucked the writing inspiration out of me. :)

32 MoneyNing 01.05.08 at 3:58 pm

Golbguru: I perfectly understand as a fellow blogger :) Good luck with your new job!

I bought Honda a few months ago, and Im still sure I did a great choice. Civic of course!

34 Hid Conversion Kits 01.10.08 at 1:43 am

Honda Civic is a good reliable car but i tend to go more for Toyota.

35 Ames Tiedeman 01.13.08 at 10:22 am

The Chevrolet Malibu just got 2008 car of the year. America is back! Do any of you posting here even notice?

36 Ames Tiedeman 01.13.08 at 10:24 am

Kitty:

Where do you think you get your facts? Name one American car that is made in China for export back to America? Answer:
ZERO.

37 Ames Tiedeman 01.13.08 at 10:25 am

Jack:

I agree.

I love my civic–5+ plus years later absolutely no problems and over 100K on it. I bought mine new (bargained hard) and also noticed used ones were about the same price.

I recently took it in to my mechanic for routine maintenance and he told me, your car was made in Canada–not Japan. He said it like it was a bad thing, but then added something along the lines of, “at least it wasn’t made in America.”

39 Kristin 01.28.08 at 4:58 am

Hi! nice posting and disscussion as well:) Regards for every one !

40 Tex 01.29.08 at 11:57 am

Still driving my 1997 Civic after 11 years, now at around 160k miles. I think the new one is kind of ugly (too wedge-like / faux futuristic), but to each their own. Aiming to pass the 200k mark before I move to more fancy pants pastures.

41 Adfecto 02.21.08 at 2:58 pm

Not a bad car, but once you see the Accord there is no contest. The extra money is worth it in a heartbeat. The V6 coupe (which unfortunately my wife won’t let me get because it is a two door) is the sexiest car for the money I’ve seen.

42 Jeff & Heather 02.24.08 at 9:03 am

Congrats on the Honda! We were torn between a Civic and Fit Sport ourselves. Ended up getting the Fit Sport for it’s flexibility as a cargo carrier. Honda’s last forever, which is better than I can say for our last couple of cars (Nissan and Ford respectively). Keep us (the readers) posted on the simple things such as maintenance fees, quality, etc.

I read your post with interest… I am in the market for a new car. My current Civic just hit 235,000 miles, and I am realizing it needs to be replaced soon.

I know I will buy used, but _how_ used is the question? I blogged about it here:

Nice! Hondas are amazing. Civics are pretty nice, they are pretty popular as well… and have stayed amongst the most popular compact cars around. It has awesome gas mileage and its pretty darn reliable! Great choice.
