Top Posts From The Month Of October

by golbguru on November 8, 2007

Call me naive, but I always thought that hosts of late-night talk shows made up their own jokes and funny stuff. So, this writers’ strike has brought some new disappointing knowledge to me:

Late-night talk show and comedy shows, including “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The Late Show with David Letterman” and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” have announced they’ll air reruns Monday night and until further notice. (source: CNN)

I used to admire Letterman and Leno because I thought they were funny.

Anyways, here are some popular posts from last month - in case you missed them earlier. :)

Haven’t you ever watched the Emmys? The nominations for best variety writing come with a passel of writers for every show.

I hold out little hopes for the fortunes of the WGA, but I hope they win.

Now now, don’t be harsh on Lettermans and Lenos. There is too much stuff happening in the world that a single man cannot possibly comprehend everything and make necessary jokes. Letterman himself is on the writing staff for his show, as I am sure Leno and O’Brian would be.

I recall hearing some years ago that Johnny Carson used to send jokes to Lettermen in retirement. That’s a pretty good source of writing!

In addition to the amount of news Letterman and Leno would have to keep up with in order to write their own shows, it also takes a lot of time to write enough jokes to fill an hour-long show. So it’s quite all right for them to rely on professional writers to fill out the show. Sometimes I wish I had a writer so that I can comment on more blogs. :)

Wow, I didn’t even know about the strike

You shouldn’t be too upset about this. Most of the joke is also in the delivery of it so I bet Letterman and Leno are funny even if they didn’t come up with 1 hour of funny content every single day.

I have been reading on other news sites that as writers on their own shows they are part of the strike.

Don’t be too hard on them. Comedy is about 80% delivery anyways. You or I (well, let me speak for myself) could probably never pull-off many of the jokes they deliver.
