Readers Get Your Dividend: $100 “Anything You Want” Giveaway

by golbguru on March 15, 2007

In the last seven months, this blog has come a long way from being a weak, disoriented start-up to attracting it’s first advertising deal and crossing the 50,000 visitors mark not too long ago. This journey would not have been possible without the support of some loyal fellow bloggers, avid readers, critics, and commentators. As a way of appreciating the continued support, I would like to give something back to my readers (you!). If you are a personal finance enthusiast, you will consider this giveaway as your *dividend* for investing your time and efforts in reading, commenting, and providing feedback on this blog, and for encouraging me to strive towards generating better content.

Ideally, I would have liked to give something to everybody who has provided a feedback on this blog; however, I am not yet in the Forbes list of billionaires, and will have to make do with distributing just $100 according to the following scheme:

  • Four readers will get *anything* they wish for, up to a maximum of $25 each (shipping must be included).
  • *Anything* means - any one thing that is preferably related to personal finance (for e.g. books, magazine subscriptions, piggy bank, money games, gift cards to book shops/online book stores, etc.)

The rules are like this:

  • To be eligible, you need to leave a comment on this post in this manner: “I wish for _______”, (don’t put any links here and you cannot ask for cash) and below that you must answer these three questions:
    • In your opinion, what is the best action you have taken to ensure a better financial future for yourself or your family?
    • How do you intend to use the thing you have wished for?
    • What is your favorite post on this blog? (You don’t need to explain why, just give the title)

That’s it ! it’s that simple. :) Entries will be accepted till Thursday, 29th March.

I will number all the comments and randomly choose 4 winners from them by using something like this. After the 4 winners are selected, orders will be placed for their *wishes*. All other relevant details will be discussed only with the 4 winners.

There are different ways in which you can maximize what you can get from this giveaway. Think over it…do some research. :)

That’s sweet Golbguru!

OK, here’s my wish: Security Analysis: The Classic 1940 Edition by Benjamin Graham. The price is higher than $25, but I can use the money to get the book.

For the three questions:

1. I don’t have a single move that’s considered the best, but starting investing in 2001 shortly after we graduated helped a lot. And those shares we bought when the market was in a slump now give us the best returns.
2. It’s a book, so I assume I have to read it, :D.
3. Well, there are a lot of good stuff here, and it’s hard for me to single one out. ;)

I wish for a gift card to an online book store.
1 I paid off and cut up all credit cards.
2 To buy a book on making money more efficiently with an at home business.
3 I love all of your articles but one of my favorites is; An Interesting Way Of Cutting Your Expenses: Freeze Your Cards!

Thank you for this opportunity! You do not run across people like you to often!

I wish for a $25 check to deposit into my online bank account, or if that’s inacceptable- an Amazon gift card to buy a few used finance books.

1) The best thing I’ve done is actually reading up on the topic of finances, instead of ignoring it and hoping everything will just work itself out in the future.

2) I will either read the books (if given the gift card), or retire off the interest in 200 years (if given the check).

3) I don’t have time to go back and pick an all-time favorite, but of recent posts you’ve done, I really enjoyed “Deconstructing My Credit Score After 0% APR Credit Card Arbitrage.” Looking forward to updates on this one.

Well, well well….let em see here! :)

1.) First, I think the biggest and best step I have taken is actually starting to save some money.

2.) I thik I would like a magazine subscription on finance like Kipplingers. I wouldn’t mind a suggestion.

3.) My new favorite is the one previous to this about freezing your credit cards.

i wish for a gift card to amazon.com

01. i think the best thing i have done to make a better financial future for myself has been to actually start the process. i have become focused and dedicated to tracking my spending, putting money into several investments vehicles (401k, ira, savings, bonds, gold, silver, cds) and always trying to take in as much information i can. there can always be improvement.

02. i would use my gift to purchse a few books. i am looking to purchase a few of the john bogle titles (the bogleheads’ guide to investing) and/or benjamin graham (the intelligent investor). these are considered “bibles of investing” by many, and i truly believe i should see what they have to offer.

03. since it is fresh and so on topic for me at the moment (i just purchased 2 golden eagles) “gold as investment: the basics” is my most recent favorite post. i am looking forward to the continuation…

Golbguru,

I wish for 5 great stock tips for the CNBC $1,000,0000 investment challenge. (If I win, you can donate the $25 to the charity of your choice.)

1. Best thing, although I hope never to use it, is life insurance.

2. Win the million dollar grand prize:-)

3. The fish tank toilet. I laughed so hard it hurt:-)

Congratulations on crossing the 50K mark!
I wish for a gift card.

1. Recognizing we were in debt and going into tightwad-cheapskate-pennypincher mode until we paid it all off.

2. Muahahahaha… i have money, i am rich, i go shopping, i buy world.

3. Ditto as Sun :)

I wish for a subscription to Forbes (or Money) magazine.

1. Begin making/having budgets and sticking to it - even when I don’t stick to it, I’ve become to not get discouraged.
2. Learn about investing and start investing once I get a job (currently last semester in school).
3. Most recently it’s “All about watching movies for cheap” - I have Redbox in the area now, but I’m going to move in a couple of months. It’s one of the things I’ll miss, but this post helped me find out that they’re having DVDPlay where I’m probably moving to!

A wish for a gift card to target.. although I’d prefer a direct payment to paypal.

1) Probably continueing to drive my crappy car. I’d love a new one, but with barely 60k miles, I can’t justify it.

2) if it was the paypal, it’d go into my bank account, if the target, probably to buy some necessities, or help fund the purchase of the new Family Guy dvds.

3) How to buy a heart attack for $3.99.. it made me hungry.

i wish for a magazine subscription(s) to the magazine(s) of your choice. i trust your opinion.

1. the best thing i did was set a goal and start saving for it. my husband and i set a goal to move to america and start a business (i’m american, but he’s japanese and we’re living in japan). we’ve saved a year’s worth of money so that we’ll be able to fully concentrate on building a business (or businesses rather as we have lots of ideas) without having to worry about how the bills will get paid. we leave for america in just 2 weeks and a day!
2. i love magazines and i’ve never regularly read financial magazines. when i lived in america, i wasn’t interested in learning about money. and now in japan, magazines are prohibitively expensive, especially when you’re saving for a particular goal. i thought about asking for an amazon gift certificate, but i think the best thing is to get books out of the library (a luxury i can’t wait to have access to again…). a magazine would serve a double purpose for me…i’d get to learn more about money and then use the pictures in them for collages. :-)
3. “get rid of your debt without worrying about the latte factor”

love,
shannon

I wish for the Money Savvy Piggy Bank for my son (http://www.msgen.com/prod/assembled/money_savvy_pig.html).

The best actions I am taking to ensure a better financial future for our family are paying off our debt aggressively and learning how to live a balanced life of spending less than we earn.

Since the Money Savvy Pig is for my son, I would like to work with him with it so he can learn the value of saving and investing at an early age (he’s 5). So far, I’ve read nothing but positive results about this piggy bank.

My favorite post is probably no surprise to anyone: “How I Killed My Debt and What I Learned From It” ;)

I wish for an amazon.com gift card. Similar to Tricia (see above) I would love to get one of those ATM toys for my two nephews….though Tricia’s link to the piggy bank looks cute (and less noisy!)

The best action(s) I’ve taken thus far is paying off all bills in full and on time. Sure, there are some tempting loans and repayment plans, but I’ve seen many friends miss one payment and then get hit by skyrocketing interest rates and fees. Better to just pay it all off in one swoop and owe $0.

I would use your generous reward to purchase the ATM bank toy for my crazy little nephews. My sister has asked for it (and she rarely makes requests to the family!) so she must really want it for her babies.

I like many of your articles but was personally impressed most by your “Bank of America scam” article, because I receieved similar email! Luckily, I noticed many of the typos that you pointed out. Thank you for the detailed screenshots and tips on how to spot phishing scams.

I wish for Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover.

My wife and I just recently started reading about and considering out financial future. We owe over $122k in student loans (and I’m not even done!), but only in the past month have our eyes been opened to the Personal Finance world.

My wife and I plan to use the book to learn how we can start using out (little) income to pay off our debt and start saving for certain financial goals.

My favorite post is:
All about watching movies for cheap. (we love the cinema!)

14 Jason 03.19.07 at 7:13 am

I wish for either :1)The Rules of Money: How to Make It and How to Hold on to It by Richard Templar & Endangered Minds: Why Children Don’t Think And What We Can Do About It by Jane M. Healy or 2)An Amazon gift card to buy those books.

1)The best thing I have done is starting a spreadsheet for tracking my spending and saving on a monthly basis. It helps me see where my money is going, where I need to cut spending and how my investments are growing.

2)These are two books that I have been meaning to get for a while, hopefully they will provide me with some very useful information.

3)Favorite post “0% APR Credit Card Arbitrage Quick Tips” - Trying to decide if this is something I want to do and the more info I can get the better.

15 Savvy Steward 03.20.07 at 9:47 am

I wish for $25 to Amazon.

1. The best financial action I’ve taken is when I started to track my spendings using an Excel spreadsheet. Now I track every penny and have a much better idea of where my income goes.

2. I’m getting married soon and could use it to furnish our new apartment.

3. My favorite post is “Why I Walk To Work.”

16 Mary 03.20.07 at 1:05 pm

I wish for a $25 gift certificate to Amazon.com or Borders.

1. The best thing I did was to create a budget and stick to it!!

2. I would buy a personal finance book, and would have tons of fun picking out just the right one or ones.

3. Getting Rid of your Debt without Worrying about the Latte Factor. As I had just finished reading “Start Late, Finish Rich,” it was great timing.

17 blaine 03.20.07 at 2:49 pm

I wish for an Amazon gift card.

1. My wife and I stopped using our credit cards and are using a consumer credit counseling service to eliminate all of our credit card debt.

2. I would like to purchase books to learn more about saving and spending money wisely.

3. “The Confusing World Of Credit Scores And Some Pointers For Getting FICO Scores For Cheap”

18 Magazine_Lover 03.21.07 at 2:14 am

I wish for free magazine subscription.
1. The best action I have taken to ensure a better financial future for myself & for my family is to have a secured and decent job right after graduating from college.
2.Well, free magazine subscription will not only entertain me but will also help contribute a lot of new knowledge which can help broden my skills and vocabularies.
3. My favorite post on this blog is the “Education Is A Great Economic Leveler”.

19 Melvyn 03.23.07 at 12:27 am

I wish for a “Fossil Mens Leather Bifold Wallet - Chicago Sliding 2 in 1 Wallet (Color: Black)” from amazon.com.

The best action I have taken to ensure a better financial future for myself and my family - becoming my own boss.

How do I intend to use the thing I have wished for - To carry money and cards more efficiently and conveniently.

My favorite post on this blog - “I Thought It’s A Giant Mosquito!” (offbeat and funny - that’s not to say I want more non-financial stuff but it’s nice every now and then to take a break).

I wish for a $25 Amazon Gift Certificate

I think the best financial action that I have taken for the future of my family is being committed to paying off all of my short term debt. I will have all of my debt, except for the mortgage paid off by the end of this year, maybe even sooner depending on how my blog does.

If I win the $25 Amazon Gift Certificate, I will turn around and give it away again on my blog.

I wish for a subscription to money magazine ($9.95) and a used copy of The Millionaire Next Door (Paperback) (~$7.50).

#1 - The best action I’ve taken is taking my finances seriously. 401k to above the match, life insurance, and I’m trying to open a Roth IRA, and I’m back in school furthering my education (finance major).

#2 - I plan on using it to further my finance goals. Education is key, and I’ve loved what I’ve read in money, and am in the process of developing a wish-list of finance books.

#3 - Save Thousands Of Dollars By Choosing Your Car Wisely (I’m new to your blog, but I really like your most recent post).

22 Shouldbeworking 03.28.07 at 6:04 am

I wish for world peace(a steal for $25, right?). If you can’t work that out I’ll settle for a gift card to Amazon.com.

1. I would have to think that it is our attempt to get rid of all credit card debt. The mountain is huge, but we are making strides at reaching the peak and can’t wait for the trip back down.

2. With the World Peace…….I’d just enjoy it. With the gift card, I’d more than likely use it to purchase a book(books?) for my son, who needs a little advice from someone other than “Dad”(you have to love teenagers!)

3. That is like trying to choose between chocolate, ice cream, or cake. They are ALL good!
