Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Application To Personal Finance

What’s Zen dude?

Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance PostIn the context of motorcycle maintenance, Zen is a philosophy that tries to improve the quality of a broken motorcycle by fixing the most fundamental problems instead of using temporary fixes. When you are doing this, you will run into a lot of dirt, gooey stuff, damaged parts, non-working parts, and more such stuff…and sometimes you will discover the root cause of the problem in one or more of these things. If you don’t fix that root cause (or causes) first, any temporary repairs to make your motorcycle run again, are going to fail quickly. This, in short, is the concept of Zen (in my opinion).

For example, assume your problem is “drop in the RPM”. A temporary solution would be to adjust the throttle and increase the RPM. But, the root cause of that problem might be a worn out and malfunctioning fuel-injection assembly. In this case, the Zen-way would be to repair/replace the fuel-injection assembly.

So, what’s that got to do with personal finance?

To find that out, read this article “Zen and the Art of Financial Prudence” on Tricia’s blog Blogging Away Debt. No prizes for guessing the author. :)

Tricia, if you are reading this, thanks for the opportunity.
