YouTube To Share Money With Video Uploaders

by golbguru on January 28, 2007

Read this latest BBC report. Seems like YouTube’s revenue sharing model will become a reality in the coming months.

YouTube founder Chad Hurley confirmed to the BBC that his team was working on a revenue-sharing mechanism that would “reward creativity”.
The system would be rolled out in a couple of months, he said, and use a mixture of adverts, including short clips shown ahead of the actual film.

Speculations about this appeared way before (October 2006) in this article. Here is an excerpt from the article.

YouTube users could be paid for their video clips after the popular website was bought by Google for around $1.6bn (£900m).
Those who upload clips will get a slice of advertising revenue on the pages containing their videos.

This also implies that every Tom, Dick, and Harry will start uploading videos…and that videos you like will be preceeded with some junky advertisements.  :) But for some, this is a chance to try if their handycam skills can strike some gold. :)

Youtube needs to get its act together first. If they start paying perverts for content, they are going to get sued by a LOT of victims.

I wonder how they’ll be able to filter between actual original material and just copies of copyrighted, or non-original, material. Or even if 5 people put the same “original” video up, who gets the money?

BD: yeah…there are many such potential problems, but with Google’s way of doing things (read AdSense) I think they will take the trash out.

MoneyFwd: May be it is something like “Cost per view” basis. So you get the share only if people watch your video more than others…so if there are 10 similar videos…people will start rating them (as they are doing it now)..the one with the highest rating usually gets watched more often and that video will get a bigger share of the revenue. I am just cooking this up right now…I don’t really know how Google plans to handle it.

There are so many video sharing sites out there these days. It’s the new fad right now. I know someone who just became CEO of the next video sharing site. I don’t recall the name of this company right now but I’ll find out (it’s still private). They all try to have a twist on the same idea. Have you heard of gofish.com? It was the first site I knew about where you could upload videos. Youtube ate it for breakfast though.
