Have you seen the new Gillette Fusion Power? I stumbled on this product on Amazon.com and visited Gillette’s website for more details. Here is what I found there:
What? Microchip for shaving? Ok, either our shaving skills are on a decline here, or some people think that some other people are too stupid to shave their stubbles properly without a microchip.
I mean I can understand the transition from one blade to two blades to three blades to four blades to five blades to n blades, but having five blades and a microchip…no one can beat that. May be this one with a microchip can beat that in future:
This microchip operated hair shaving toy is not very cheap (but not very expensive either when compared to some other Gillette products). Here are some screenshots on Amazon showing the price of the system and the replacement razors. May be it’s just because I am a student, but those prices seem like an insult to frugality (look at the list price of the replacement razors.
Or may be I am just getting too old to appreciate these things…because from the reviews, majority of the people seem to be happy about it (!). Or may it’s because I have seen people use the following three objects for shaving their stubbles/beards in my life time, that I don’t appreciate the use of a microchip in a razor:
Anyone recognize these things…or even seen these before?
And while I still have your attention, care to drop a line about your shaving expenses over any given month?

I don’t use Fusion, but I sue the older battery powered razor. For some reason it doesn’t work as well when it isn’t powered, although they’ve said that the power doesn’t necessarily do anything.
For me, though, I shave 5 days a week usually and use about 1-2 razors a month, and about one thing of shaving cream every 2 months or so. I used to use an electric but my gf at the time (now wife) said I should try real shaving.
and I forgot.. a pack of 8 razors is about that amount ($20 or so) and shaving cream is $7 or so. Plus after shave stuff is another $6, but I use one bottle every 3-4 months.
Hmm, shaving expenses? That’s something I’d have to average over the year, because when it’s cold up here…we need every edge we can get! This is definitely the season for beards on boys and very fuzzy girls. I’d say I use up maybe $25/year on shaving expenses, and Fiance uses maybe $70/year. Probably less than that for both of us.
I have to link you to a comparably foolish product for women, though: a vibrating razor. Uh…what’s the purpose of that? And yet the razor is still better than the cartridges.
Ah, welcome to world of superficial beautification. I was just wondering when the men would catch up to women’s gizmos. Microchips for us are now a think of the post. Ellen is on to something there. I must check out the vibrating razor…
I recognize the stright razor, used to use one. Pretty close shave, a little scary. The five razor blade thing is so wasteful. I use an electric razor, remington I think. It does the job without a microchip.
Shaving for men has become too gadegty! Do men like that? What about the Trac 2 razor? A nice two bladed system that I can borrow in the shower:)
Monthly shaving expenses…. let’s see. I buy the hubby edge gel when on sale with a coupon. So I don’t really spend alot on that stuff. The blades ( Trac 2 style) are store brand and are about half the price.
Thanks guys and gals for shaving your thoughts.
Call me stingy or whatever, but I have figured out that the two/three blade disposable razors in Walmart/Sams give a pretty good shave. I remember seeing a box of these razors in Sams club; 48 razors for $14 ! With my irregular shaving schedule, they last me for a year..almost.
Also, I have noticed that if you shave after a warm bath…you can get a nice clean shave even with just one blade razors.
A razor can do only so much to the “quality” of the shave…the rest depends on your technique.
Hi,

I found your blog via google by accident and have to admit that youve a really interesting blog
Just saved your feed in my reader, have a nice day
While I use an electric razor, & thus have no interest in this per se, I am an Electrical Engineer in design. While a microcontroller is not necessary to create pulses and a timeout feature, the price of single chip microcontrollers is so cheap (–> $.25 ea. in large quantities) that the use of such a part can actually save a good deal of money over the analog or digital parts that would otherwise be required.
I’m 35 andhave used a 1920’s vintage gilette double-edge razor (I sometimes even use use those Merkur Super blades pictured above) since 1990. I switched because I had my grandfathers razor and saw some of the blades at the drug store. Super good shave, and it’s super cheap. I have a heavy-ish beard, shave 2-3 times a week, and I spend no more than $5 year on blades. Unlike the shitty cartridges which when they get dull in about one week, REALLY HURT, forcing you to pop on a new one. With the double edge, I replace the blade because I’m about ready for an even smoother shave. Three years ago I was given a brush and some shave cream. $16 tub or the stuff (kiehl’s) lasts a year and makes shaving easy and actually enjoyable. Closer, hands down, than any of that n-blade battery-powered consumerist schlock for suckers.
Over abundance of technology. Such microchip is simply unnecessary.
