The Sunday Review #4

by golbguru on January 14, 2007

It’s been a while since the last Sunday Review on this blog. Man…some of the recent Sundays were really busy, especially during the holidays and the ones immediately following them. But now it’s back and here is the 4th Sunday Review for y’all. Enjoy and peace out :)

Forget About the Latte Factor
Flexo of Consumerism Commentary is not much of a believer in “The Latte Factor”. He believes that bigger things count more towards accumulating wealth. Read about his thoughts in this post.
Pragmatic Personal Finance Tips for College Students
I was thinking about writing on this topic for a while, but those thoughts never made it to the screen. “ispf” has now beaten me to this. Check out this post on his blog in which he does a good job of giving some pretty handy tips for students to save money on every-day stuff.
Frugality and Gender
Men are thrifty? Or women are spendthrifts? Or men are financially profligate? Or women are frugal? What’s money got to do with gender? Read Dawn’s take on this article at Frugal For Life.
Sixteen Ways Being Disorganized Costs You Money
Mighty Bargain Hunter points out to how you can lose money if you are disorganized. 16 simple things are listed in this post on which you can improve your organizational skills and save some money (or rather…not lose money).
Dollar-cost-averaging: For Higher Return or For Lower Risk?
An interesting article with quite some analysis on The Sun’s Financial Diary. If you don’t know what is “Dollar Cost Averaging” you must read this first before you can understand what Sun is talking about. Read it now because sooner or later you are going to run into it and will regret not knowing about it earlier. :)
When Income from Your Investments Cover Your Living Expenses
Trent of The Simple Dollar explains the concept of a “crossover point” with some graphical examples. “Crossover point” is the point at which your investment income is more than your expenses..meaning, beyond this point you could just stop working and earn the fruits of your investment. :) There are a lot of practical things ignored in this analysis, but nevertheless it might make some of you motivated towards working for it. Be discreet though, on how literally you take these numbers.
Avoid the Next Internet Scam: Tips on Selling Safely
SVB’s helpful hints on how to avoid getting scammed on the internet, posted at The Digerati Life. Now this I am going to stress because, just a few hours ago, I got this comment (by Alex of Youngfinances.com) on one of my earlier posts:

“One word of warning: if you’re selling the gift cards on eBay, make sure you ship them with some sort of tracking and signature required. One of the people who bought a gift card for me tried to scam me by saying he never received the card.”

Thanks Alex for that information.

Thanks for the mention golbguru! I am sure you still have several tips for students that are not covered by English Major (in the unofficial “Part1″) or me (in the “Part 2″). I hope you will consider putting them together in the form of “Part 3″ in on this blog, which reaches a lot more readers. It will be great, if between the young PF bloggers, we can get a sort of series going on the pragmatic PF tips for students.

Good recap for the week! I particularly liked MB Hunter’s piece on disorganization. I’m one who wants order all the time but can’t seem to do it well enough by my own standards. Where does all the time go? ;)

ispf: yes sir, I will try and get some more juice squeezed out of the topic..but you guys have pretty much explained everything :)
SVB: Are you an engineer? you sound like one :). I am on the same side of the table, in addition to “disorganization”, I am also very prone to “last-minute-organization” …..and like you, ask the exact same question “where did the time go?” :)
