Read Your Discover Card Cashback Offers Carefully

by golbguru on November 14, 2006

I was just going through a pile of some unshredded papers from the last couple of months and stumbled on a couple of interesting Discover credit card cashback offers. First, a bit of a background. We applied for two Discover cards (1 card for each of us) in September, and these offers arrived with the new cards. Both cards were of the same type (Discover Platinum Card); the applications were made within minutes of each other and both cards were approved for the exact same credit limit. We received the cards together and the subsequent cashback offers for both cards on the same day. Below are scans of these offers and tell me if you find a difference. :)

Mine looked like the first one! Possibly they do this so that people don’t set up a lot of cards they promptly cancel just to get $20. I’d been wondering, if I cashed out, canceled the account, and opened another a month or so later, would they give me another $20 reward?
Seems to me you have the answer right there.

Dimes: yeah you may not get the same offer again.
in our case, they were separate cards (card 1 is mine, card 2 is my wife’s)…it’s not like we cancelled and signed up again for another $20 offer, and yet there is a difference in the offer.
I am not sure about the reason behind this randomness from Discover, but it sure tells me that they tried to sneak in a not-so-good offer for no particular reason.

I’ve now realized that they must have one of those cashback fortune-cookie machine somewhere in the back room.

I dont have a Discover card, but sure do see the same thing with mastercard.

I really need to be reading all that paperwork that comes with my credit card :)

I bet you the different offers represent different marketing campaigns they are testing for effectiveness.

It looks like you will get $20 with either offer. The second one requires you to make 19 more purchases:-)

    holy moly!

Gosh, i wish companies would be honest… that’s never happened to me before… but i’ve never tried to get two cards…

Well, it may be because the two of you have the same address, same telephone number, etc. Perhaps they’re encouraging her to make more purchases. Maybe there’s something in her credit history to show she’s more likely to do that.
I’ve had my card since August, and I’m not sure I’ve made 20 purchases in that timeframe. I wouldn’t have rushed to spend money if I got the second offer.

Be sure, credit card companies are not your friends really. They try to make money of you while you try to spend THEIR money. the fin print can help if you’re smart enough to understand all the pitfalls.
